How to Choose Flowers for Your Someone Special

Selecting flowers for someone who holds a meaningful place in your life begins with understanding the nature of your relationship. Consider whether your bond is romantic, familial, or built on deep friendship—each calls for a distinct approach. For a partner, rich reds and passionate tones often speak volumes, whilst a cherished friend might appreciate cheerful yellows or soft pastels that reflect warmth without romantic undertones.

Think about the recipient's personality. Are they drawn to bold, dramatic arrangements or do they prefer understated elegance? Someone with a minimalist sensibility will likely treasure a refined, monochromatic bouquet, whereas a person who embraces colour and exuberance may delight in a vibrant, mixed selection. Pay attention to any flowers they have mentioned admiring in the past—such details transform a lovely gesture into a deeply personal one.

Finally, consider the setting where the flowers will be received. A grand arrangement suits a celebration at home, but something compact and elegant works better for an office delivery. Matching the scale and style of your bouquet to both the person and the occasion ensures your gift feels thoughtfully chosen rather than generic.

Best Occasions to Surprise Your Someone Special with Flowers

Anniversaries remain one of the most fitting moments to send flowers, marking another year of shared memories with a tangible symbol of affection. Whether it is your first or your fortieth, a carefully chosen bouquet reinforces the significance of the milestone.

Birthdays offer another natural opportunity. Flowers arriving on the morning of a birthday set an uplifting tone for the entire day and show that you remembered the date with care rather than as an afterthought. For added impact, coordinate the arrangement with their birth month flower or favourite blooms.

Some of the most cherished deliveries, however, arrive without any official reason at all. A spontaneous "just because" bouquet conveys that you were thinking of them on an ordinary Tuesday—a powerful message in itself. Similarly, flowers sent during difficult times—an illness, a stressful period at work, or a personal loss—communicate support and solidarity when words alone may feel inadequate.

Apologies, too, gain sincerity when accompanied by flowers. They do not replace a genuine conversation, but they demonstrate the effort behind your words and help soften tension. Whatever the occasion, the underlying intent matters most: flowers should feel like a heartfelt extension of your sentiment, not a substitute for it.

Someone Special–Friendly Colours and Styles

The colour palette you choose sends a message before a single word is spoken. Deep reds and burgundies traditionally convey passion and romance, making them ideal for partners. Softer blush pinks and creams suggest tenderness and admiration, striking a balance between affection and elegance. For someone who appreciates modern aesthetics, consider muted terracotta, sage green, or dusty rose—tones that feel contemporary yet sophisticated.

If your recipient has a lively, extroverted nature, vibrant corals, sunny yellows, and rich purples can mirror their energy and make them smile. Conversely, a person with classic tastes may prefer timeless white roses, ivory peonies, or pale hydrangeas arranged in a structured, polished style.

In terms of form, hand-tied bouquets wrapped in quality paper offer a natural, relaxed feel, whilst arrangements presented in glass vases or ceramic pots provide longevity and visual impact. For a touch of whimsy, letterbox flowers deliver a delightful surprise that fits through the door when the recipient is away—practical and charming in equal measure.

What to Write in a Card for Your Someone Special

The message accompanying your flowers can elevate a beautiful gesture into an unforgettable one. Keep in mind that brevity often carries more weight than length; a few sincere sentences tend to resonate more than a lengthy note that struggles to find its point.

For a romantic partner, you might write: "Every day with you feels like a gift. These flowers are just a small way to say I love you." If the tone should be warm yet slightly more restrained—perhaps for a close friend or family member—consider: "Thinking of you today and always. Hope these brighten your afternoon." When offering support during a difficult period, simplicity works best: "I'm here for you. Sending love and these blooms to remind you that you're not alone."

If crafting the perfect words feels daunting, MyFlowers offers an AI-powered card feature that helps generate thoughtful messages tailored to your occasion. You provide a few details about the recipient and the sentiment you wish to express, and the tool suggests phrasing you can personalise further. It is a helpful starting point, especially when emotions run high and the right words seem elusive.

Top-Picked Bouquets for Someone Special

Certain arrangements consistently emerge as favourites among customers ordering for someone they hold dear. Classic rose bouquets—particularly in deep red or soft pink—remain perennially popular for romantic gestures, combining timeless appeal with unmistakable symbolism.

Mixed seasonal bouquets also rank highly, offering variety and visual interest. These change throughout the year, ensuring the recipient enjoys the freshest blooms available while experiencing something unique to the moment. Peonies, when in season, prove especially sought after; their lush, romantic form and delicate fragrance make them a standout choice for partners and close friends alike.

For those seeking something distinctive, contemporary arrangements featuring protea, eucalyptus, and textured foliage deliver a modern aesthetic that appeals to design-conscious recipients. Letterbox selections have grown in popularity as well, prized for their convenience and the element of surprise they bring when the recipient discovers them waiting at home.

Whatever style you choose, the key is alignment: match the bouquet's character to the recipient's tastes, and the gift will speak for itself.

Flowers Etiquette: Do's and Don'ts for Someone Special

Selecting flowers involves a few points of etiquette worth bearing in mind. First, consider the recipient's living situation. An extravagant arrangement may overwhelm a small flat or a shared office desk, whereas a modest posy might feel underwhelming for a significant milestone. Aim for proportionality—let the scale of your gift suit the context.

Be mindful of colour associations. While red roses are universally understood as romantic, sending them to a colleague or casual acquaintance could create awkwardness. Similarly, white lilies, though elegant, carry funereal connotations for some, so gauge whether the recipient might interpret them unintentionally.

If you know the person suffers from allergies or has pets sensitive to certain plants, choose blooms accordingly. Lilies, for instance, are toxic to cats, and heavily scented flowers may trigger discomfort for those with respiratory sensitivities.

Finally, timing matters. Flowers arriving too early in the morning or unexpectedly late in the evening can inconvenience the recipient. Whenever possible, select a delivery window that fits their routine—an afternoon slot for a home delivery or mid-morning for an office surprise ensures your gesture lands gracefully.

FAQ
What bouquets are in the Flowers for Someone Special collection?

This collection brings together hand-tied bouquets chosen for a heartfelt gesture, from romantic roses to bright, celebratory mixes and softer seasonal designs. Every bouquet is made by hand in-house by our florists and arrives ready to place straight into a vase.

Sizes range from a modest gesture to a generous statement, so you can match the bouquet to the moment and your budget. If you'd like a hand choosing, tell us the occasion and how much you'd like to spend by chat, WhatsApp or phone, and we'll suggest options that fit.

How much do the bouquets cost?

Most bouquets here fall between roughly £25.90 and £60.90, with custom rose bouquets going higher. The exact price depends on the design you choose, its size and any gifts you add.

Each bouquet shows its own price on the product page, and all prices include VAT. Delivery is shown separately and confirmed at checkout from the recipient's postcode, so pick a bouquet, add the address and any extras, and the total updates before you pay.

Can you deliver the flowers on the same day?

Yes — same-day delivery is available in many areas when you order in time. In London we deliver the same day using our own drivers and couriers across three-hour slots through the day and into the evening. Outside London, same-day delivery is possible on orders placed before 15:00 and isn't available on Sundays.

Availability always depends on the recipient's postcode and is confirmed at checkout. Add the delivery address early on, and we'll show the same-day slots and cut-off times that apply to that location.

Which parts of the UK do you deliver to?

We deliver to most areas across the UK, including London and major cities such as Manchester, Birmingham, Liverpool, Leeds and Glasgow. Northern Ireland is the one region we don't currently cover.

Delivery options are matched automatically to the recipient's postcode when you order, and we deliver 365 days a year, including weekends and bank holidays. Enter the postcode at checkout to confirm the dates and slots available for that address before you complete the order.

How much does delivery cost?

Delivery cost depends on the location, timing and method. Many bouquets are shown with free shipping, while faster, time-specific options carry a charge: in London, standard same-day delivery starts at £8 and an urgent next-slot option is £15. Outside London, same-day (ordered before 15:00, not Sundays) and next-day delivery are each from £5.

The exact charge is calculated from the recipient's postcode and the slot you choose, and it appears at checkout before payment. Enter the address and your preferred timing to see the precise cost for your order.

Can I choose the delivery date and time?

You choose the delivery date at checkout, and in London you can also select a three-hour time slot, such as 09:00–12:00, 12:00–15:00, 15:00–18:00, 18:00–21:00 or 21:00–00:00.

Outside London, orders travel with Royal Mail Tracked and other trusted couriers, so we work to your chosen date rather than a fixed window. More than 90% of these deliveries arrive on the requested date, though there can occasionally be a delay of up to a day. Choose your date and, where available, your slot once you've entered the recipient's postcode.

Can I add a personal message or greeting card?

A greeting card with your own message is available as a paid add-on while you place the order. It's a simple way to make a bouquet for someone special feel personal, whether you want a few warm words or a private note only they will understand.

Write your message in the card field during checkout and we'll include it with the delivery. If you have any questions along the way, our team is available by chat, WhatsApp or phone.

Will the recipient know the bouquet is from me?

By default every order is anonymous, so your name isn't shared with the recipient unless you choose to include it. They see only the message you add to the greeting card.

If you'd like them to know who sent the flowers, add your name or a signature to the card text at checkout. To keep it a mystery, simply leave your name out of the message.

Can I see a photo of the bouquet before it's delivered?

We send a photo of the actual bouquet for your approval before it leaves us, so you can see exactly what your someone special will receive.

If you'd like a change before dispatch, let us know and we'll adjust the arrangement where we can. To make this step smooth, please check that your contact details are correct at checkout so we can reach you quickly with the photo.

Will the flowers look like the photos on the website?

The photos on our site reflect the real bouquets, and sizes are given in centimetres so you know what to expect. Images usually show the Medium size, which means a larger choice will look fuller and a smaller one more compact.

Because flowers are natural and seasonal, there may be times when we substitute a stem with one of equivalent value and quality, and we'll agree this with you where possible. The approval photo we send before delivery is your final check that the bouquet matches what you had in mind.

How long will the flowers stay fresh after delivery?

With proper care, the flowers usually stay fresh for up to 12 days, and we include care instructions with every order. We also back this with our 7-day freshness guarantee.

If anything isn't right, you can raise a quality concern within 30 days of delivery. Send clear photos along with your order reference, and we'll review it and put things right with a replacement or refund, depending on the case. The care guidance arrives in the box, and our team is on hand for any questions.

Can I add chocolates, balloons or other gifts to the bouquet?

You can add gifts to your bouquet at checkout, including chocolates, hampers, candles, soft toys and balloons. Examples range from a Milk Tray chocolate box at £8.90 to a teddy bear at £14.90 and heart-shaped balloons at £20.90.

These extras turn a bouquet into a fuller gift for someone special and are added to your order total. Choose your bouquet first, then pick any add-ons before checkout so everything arrives together.

Can I order flowers from outside the UK?

You're welcome to order from anywhere in the world for delivery to a recipient in the UK. Our site and payment system support international orders, so you can send flowers to someone special back home while you're abroad.

Payment works in the usual way, with options including PayPal, Klarna, Apple Pay and Google Pay, as well as major cards (Visa, Mastercard, American Express and others) through Shopify Payments, and all prices are shown inclusive of VAT. The exact cards on offer can depend on your region and card issuer. Enter the UK delivery postcode and your chosen date, and we'll take care of the assembly and delivery on this side.
