How to Choose Flowers for Your Friend

Selecting flowers for a friend is a wonderfully personal gesture, yet it needn't be complicated. Start by considering the character of your friendship: is it light-hearted and full of shared jokes, or deeper and more reflective? A vibrant, playful arrangement suits the former, while an elegant, understated bouquet speaks to the latter.

Think about shades your friend gravitates towards in clothing, home décor or even their garden. If you're unsure, cheerful yellows, soft pinks and fresh greens are universally uplifting choices that convey warmth without veering into overly romantic territory. Seasonal blooms—spring tulips, summer sunflowers, autumn dahlias—add a thoughtful, timely touch that shows you've put genuine consideration into the gift.

Finally, gauge the formality of the occasion. A casual 'thinking of you' moment calls for a relaxed, hand-tied bunch, whereas a milestone birthday or significant achievement might merit a more luxurious, professionally styled arrangement. Matching the bouquet's mood to the moment ensures your friend feels truly seen.

Best Occasions to Surprise Your Friend with Flowers

Birthdays remain the classic choice, yet flowers carry meaning far beyond a single annual celebration. Consider marking promotions, new jobs or personal achievements—moments when your friend deserves recognition but might not expect it.

A 'just because' delivery can be the most memorable of all. Arriving without a specific reason, it says: *I was thinking of you today*. Few gestures communicate genuine affection so simply.

Flowers also offer comfort during difficult times. Whether a friend is unwell, navigating a challenging period or grieving, a carefully chosen arrangement provides a quiet show of solidarity. Equally, they work beautifully as an apology—sometimes words alone fall short, and a thoughtful bouquet bridges the gap with grace.

Friend-Friendly Colours and Styles

Bright, sunny palettes tend to resonate strongly when the recipient is a friend rather than a partner. Yellows, corals, lavenders and fresh whites evoke happiness and positivity without romantic undertones. If your friend has a bold personality, don't shy away from vivid oranges, hot pinks or rich purples; these hues mirror their energy.

Style-wise, relaxed hand-tied bouquets feel approachable and genuine. They suggest a garden-gathered charm rather than stiff formality. For friends with contemporary tastes, minimalist arrangements featuring a single variety—perhaps peonies or ranunculus—offer striking simplicity. Those who love cottage-garden aesthetics will appreciate mixed bunches brimming with texture: spray roses alongside eucalyptus, lisianthus paired with waxflower.

Avoid anything too structured or funereal in appearance; friends generally respond best to designs that feel joyful and organic.

What to Write in a Card for Your Friend

The message matters as much as the blooms themselves. Keep it heartfelt, not overwrought. A few ideas to spark inspiration:

Warm and light-hearted: *Saw these and thought of you—hope they make you smile as much as you make me.*

Supportive and sincere: *I know things have been tough lately. Just wanted you to know I'm here, always.*

Celebratory: *You did it! So proud of everything you've achieved. Here's to you.*

If words don't come easily, MyFlowers offers AI-generated card suggestions tailored to the occasion—simply select the tone you'd like, and a personalised message is created for you, ready to accompany your bouquet at no extra cost.

Top-Picked Bouquets for Friends

Customers sending flowers to friends frequently choose arrangements that balance cheerfulness with sophistication. Mixed pastel bouquets featuring roses, lisianthus and seasonal foliage consistently rank among the most popular—they're versatile enough to suit any décor and universally appealing.

Sunflower-led designs are another firm favourite, particularly during summer months. Their bold, open faces radiate positivity and feel inherently friendly. For something a little different, letterbox bouquets work brilliantly: compact enough to fit through a standard UK letterbox, they arrive even when the recipient isn't home, making surprise deliveries effortless.

Our customers also report that adding a small gift—artisan chocolate or a scented candle—transforms a thoughtful gesture into an occasion your friend will remember long after the petals have faded.

Flowers Etiquette: Do's and Don'ts for Friends

Do consider the setting. If your friend shares a small flat with housemates, a compact posy is more practical than an extravagant display requiring a large vase.

Do think about allergies. Lilies, while beautiful, produce pollen that some people find irritating; if you're unsure, opt for pollen-free varieties or entirely different blooms.

Don't default to red roses unless romantic connotations are intentional. Deep reds can send mixed signals; warm corals or peach tones convey affection without ambiguity.

Don't overwhelm a casual occasion with an overly grand arrangement. A heartfelt, mid-sized bouquet often feels more genuine than an enormous one that seems designed to impress rather than connect.

When in doubt, err on the side of bright, joyful and unpretentious—qualities that mirror the best friendships.

FAQ
What flowers are best to send to a friend?

For a friend we usually suggest something bright and cheerful rather than red roses, which tend to read as romantic. Mixed seasonal bouquets, sunflowers, alstroemeria or gypsophila suit a birthday, a thank you, or simply letting someone know you are thinking of them.

Every bouquet here is hand-tied by our florists and arrives ready for a vase. If you are unsure what fits the occasion, our team can help you choose over WhatsApp, phone or email before you place the order.

Can you deliver flowers to my friend on the same day?

Yes, same-day delivery is available in London and across many UK areas. In London we deliver hand-to-hand with our own drivers in three-hour slots between 09:00 and midnight, from £8.

Outside London we use Royal Mail Tracked and other trusted couriers; same-day there needs an order placed before 15:00 and is not available on Sundays. We deliver 365 days a year, including weekends and bank holidays, and the exact options for your friend's address are confirmed by postcode at checkout.

How much do flowers for a friend cost?

Bouquets in this collection start from around £25.90–£29.90 and reach about £60.90 for some signature designs, while custom rose bouquets can cost more. Options such as Harmony, Bohemia and Simple White sit in the under-£30 range.

Delivery is priced separately: some bouquets include free shipping, London courier slots start from £8, and standard delivery outside London is £5. The final amount, including any delivery fee and VAT, is shown at checkout once we have the postcode.

Can I send flowers to a friend who lives in another part of the UK?

Yes, we deliver to most areas across the UK; the one exception is Northern Ireland, which we do not currently cover. You can order from anywhere and have the flowers sent to your friend's UK address.

In London we use our own drivers and couriers, while elsewhere we rely on Royal Mail Tracked and trusted UK couriers. More than 90% of deliveries outside London arrive on the chosen date, with a possible delay of up to one day. The available options depend on the recipient's postcode, which you enter at checkout.

Will my friend know the flowers are from me?

Only if you choose to tell them — by default we keep every order anonymous. Your name appears with the bouquet only when you add it to the card message yourself.

You can include a greeting card with a personal note as a paid add-on, which is the simplest way to sign the gift. If you would rather keep it a surprise, just leave your name off the card.

Can I add a card or a small gift to the bouquet?

You can add a personalised greeting card and a range of gifts at checkout. Alongside the card, we offer chocolates, hampers, candles, balloons and soft toys to pair with the flowers.

For example, a Milk Tray chocolate box is £8.90, Champagne Truffles are £11.90, and a 22cm teddy bear is £14.90. These extras are optional and chosen on the order page before you pay.

I live abroad — can I still send flowers to a friend in the UK?

Yes, you can place an order from any country for delivery to a UK address. Our website and payment system support international orders, and you can pay by PayPal, Klarna, Apple Pay and Google Pay, along with major cards (Visa, Mastercard, American Express and others) through Shopify Payments. The cards available can differ by region and by card issuer. Every price is shown inclusive of VAT.

Enter your friend's UK address and postcode, pick the date and time slot, and we take care of the rest within the UK. Delivery availability is confirmed by that postcode at checkout, so you see the options before you commit.

What happens if my friend is not at home when the flowers arrive?

If the recipient is out, what happens next depends on the delivery method. For our London hand-to-hand deliveries, a bouquet may be held at our depot for 24 hours, with redelivery charged at £15; a refund in this situation is not guaranteed.

If you are not certain your friend will be in, a letterbox bouquet is a practical choice. It is sent by post and designed to fit through a standard letterbox, so no one needs to be home to receive it.

How long will the flowers last?

With proper care, our flowers typically stay fresh for up to 12 days, and we include care instructions with every order. Simple steps like fresh water, a clean vase and a cool spot make a real difference.

Before dispatch we send you a photo of the actual bouquet, so you can check it and request adjustments. We also stand behind quality with a 7-day freshness guarantee.

What if the bouquet arrives damaged or my friend is disappointed?

Let us know and we will put it right. You can raise a claim within 30 days of delivery by contacting us by email or phone with clear photos, the order reference and the delivery details.

We review claims within five business days, and the resolution can be a replacement delivery, a full or partial refund, or a refund of the delivery charge. The photo we send before dispatch also helps us avoid surprises in the first place.

Can I arrange regular flower deliveries for a friend?

Yes, you can set up a subscription so flowers reach your friend every 14 days or once a month. You choose the size, from Small to Extra Large, and a style such as Classic Mix, Roses, Mono or Seasonal.

Subscription delivery is always free, and you stay in control through your account or our app: pause, skip, reschedule, change the address or style, or cancel. Changes need to be made at least four business days before a delivery, with a little more notice during peak periods like Valentine's Day or Mother's Day.
