Scientists study them for their extraordinary ability to regenerate limbs, hearts, and even portions of their brains. In Aztec mythology, the axolotl was believed to embody Xolotl, a god who transformed himself to escape sacrifice. Today, the creature appears on the Mexican fifty peso banknote and has inspired characters in video games and animated films alike.
